Criminal Law

Justice will prevail.

EVEN IF YOU HAVE BEEN CHARGED BY THE POLICE, REMEMBER YOU HAVE RIGHTS

Being charged by the police is scary, we understand. The Criminal Court process is scary, we know that too. But you have rights and we can help you use your rights.

Your charge(s) can be reduced or you can even be acquitted. There are things you want to highlight to the Court. We know how to craft it, to represent you in the best light. Just because you are charged, does not mean it is the end.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I just got charged, what does it mean?

A charge means you are being formally accused of a criminal offence. It is a formal
document that states the offence together with the date, time, and place the crime occurred as
well as some supporting facts.

What will happen and what should I do now?

You will be given a court date where you will be formally informed of the charge(s). Before
that, you can engage a lawyer and consider whether you want to plead guilty, reduce the
charge or claim trial (defend yourself). We have experienced criminal lawyers who can assist
you.

Can I represent myself?

Yes you can represent yourself. However, criminal cases involve strict procedures and serious
consequences. Also, you may not be in the right frame of mind to make the right decisions.
Having a lawyer helps to protect your rights and guides you through the process. It can also
greatly improve your chances of a fair outcome.

Can the police search my home or phone without permission?

Generally, the police need a search warrant to enter your home or access your phone.
However, in urgent situations, they may conduct a search without a warrant. If this happens,
you can ask for identification and the reason for the search.

I have been granted bail, what should I do?

Bail means that you need not be in custody before the trial but need to follow other orders
imposed by the police.

Can I leave the country if I am on bail?

No, you cannot leave Singapore without the Police or Court’s permission. If you wish to
travel out of Singapore, the Court will usually increase the bail amount and both you and
your bailor must be present in Court.
